Taking advantage of a little-known law passed by former President Theodore Roosevelt back in 1906, Obama has officially declared 1.5 million acres of U.S. land, most of which is located in the state of Utah, as “national monuments.” By doing this, said land will be closed of to any sort of human expansion, including for development, farming, or energy use.

Reports indicate that the 1.3 million acres of land in Utah has been declared as the “Bears Ears Monument” in honor of Native American tribes and other conservationist groups that claim it to be sacred. Obama has also claimed another 300,000 acres of land in Clark County, Nevada, declaring it to be the “Gold Butte National Monument” for many of the same reasons.

Despite bipartisan opposition from Utah’s state legislature, which vehemently opposed this unprecedented land grab, Obama went through it anyway, presumably to stifle potential efforts by the incoming administration to utilize these geographical locales for domestic energy production — even when doing so would help decrease U.S. dependence on foreign oil and other forms of energy.

“It’s one of the biggest land grabs in the history of the United States, and it was done as this midnight monument in the waning hours of the Obama administration,” said Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz during a recent interview with Fox News.

Will a Trump administration be able to restore control of land back to states? House Republicans are hopeful

There have been many instances during Obama’s eight years in the Oval Office when the controversial president decided to seize land for federal purposes. Since his first inauguration, Obama has collectively seized more than half a billion acres of land and water in the federal interest, utilizing the so-called “Antiquities Act of 1906,” the law that allowed him to do so, a whopping 29 times.

In 2016 alone, Obama claimed more than 260 million acres as federally-protected space, including a 100-million-acre piece of land in Alaska that’s roughly equivalent in size to the entire state of New Mexico. Obama has also utilized the Antiquities Act of 1906 more times than any other president since it first became law, his executive land grabs accounting for some 20 percent of all such land grabs combined.

“In the eight years he’s been in office, President Obama has seized more than 553 million acres of land and water (roughly 865,000 square miles) and placed it under federal ownership and control — enough square mileage to cover the entire state of Texas more than three times over,” writes Brittany Hughes for

“In fact, the self-aggrandizing conservationist-in-chief has placed more land and coastal areas under federal control than any other president in history, shutting off millions of miles of land to energy production or human settlement, along with shifting it outside the scope of local and state jurisdictions.”

House Republicans are already moving forward with trying to reverse these land grabs and restore control of the seized lands back to state and local jurisdictions. But this may not be possible, some reports indicate, as such reversals may not be lawful. At the same time, Obama’s use of the Antiquities Act of 1906 to seize land for non-emergency political purposes may, in and of itself, not have been lawful in the first place.

Solar power has now become the cheapest way to produce electricity /offgridnews/2017-01-08-solar-power-has-now-become-the-cheapest-way-to-produce-electricity.html /offgridnews/2017-01-08-solar-power-has-now-become-the-cheapest-way-to-produce-electricity.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 The technology has been around for decades but because it was so expensive to produce and maintain, and because it was unreliable and short-lived, the use of solar panels to generate electricity on a large scale was not economically feasible.

But it appears as though the time for affordable, widespread solar power has come.

As reported by True Activist, new data from Bloomberg New Energy Finance that was released before Christmas indicates that solar power has now become a cheaper form of energy than wind power, while also out-competing coal and natural gas for the very first time. Now, with solar energy set to become the cheapest form of electricity production on the planet, it looks as though global energy markets are about to undergo a tectonic shift as more nations around the world shift to this completely pollution-free and renewable energy form.

In its new report called “Climatescope,” the BNEF examined conditions for investing in clean energy on and off the grid in nearly 60 emerging markets (i.e. “developing” nations). In those countries, solar power that is not government- or investiment-subsidized was actually found to beat out coal and natural gas, in addition to other forms of renewable energy production. This was not just occurring on an individual basis but on a grander scale.

Global production of solar-generated electricity setting records, lowering costs

The chart below shows how there has been a major decline in the average cost of solar power production compared to wind in some 58 emerging markets, including some of the world’s biggest economies in China, India, and Brazil. Since 2010, the BNEF found, cost of solar has declined by nearly one-third.

In 2016, True Activist reported, successive records for cheap power production were set in government auctions, where private corporations gathered to compete to receive lucrative energy production contracts. The first took place in January when a contract in India was able to produce electricity for $64 per megawatt-hour. In August, Chile broke all previous records when a deal was closed for solar electricity production for just $29.10 per megawatt-hour, or just about half the price of coal-produced power.

And the thing to keep in mind is that these two price records only represent the newest projects. Others, which will be completed by year’s end, are also set to shatter records once all of the solar projects completed in 2016 are tallied up and analyzed in the coming months.

Bloomberg says that it is very possible that the total amount of solar photovoltaic panels added around the world will pass those of wind turbines for the first time ever, as the latest BNEF projections indicate that about 70 gigawatts of new solar panel production will be finished in 2016 in comparison to wind, at about 59 gigawatts.

“However, this transformation is taking place largely in emerging markets,” True Activist reported. “Wealthier nations have not seen the same success, likely due to the fact that it is difficult for solar to compete with already existing billion-dollar fossil fuel infrastructure as well as the fossil fuel lobby’s hold on federal and state governments.”

That is especially true in the United States, where solar power generation has to go up against the massive subsidies received by the fossil fuel industry, which ostensibly drives down prices for fuels and natural gas.

Solar not picking up in the U.S.-yet

But solar power has also received subsidies from taxpayers. In fact, the Obama administration announced in August 2015 new efforts to bring renewable energy to more homes in the United States, but this came after the White House earmarked and spent more than $150 billion on what turned out to be money wasted in failed solar energy firms.

As the Gateway Pundit noted, that massive expenditure only increased total U.S. energy consumption via solar-generated electricity by about 1 percent.

“President Obama subsidized solar and other renewable energy in the United States with taxpayer money to the tune of $39 billion per year on average for the past 5 years,” the Institute for Energy Research reported. “These massive subsidies, however, have done little to increase the contribution of solar power to the electricity generation mix as solar is expected to produce just 0.6 percent of electricity generation this year. Disregarding the cost to the American taxpayer and the failed solar projects in the United States, President Obama has pledged billions of dollars to fund solar energy development in India.”

Still, as True Activist noted, subsidies to the U.S. fossil fuel industry are ongoing and much higher.

But clearly, as evidenced by solar energy production in emerging economies, there is much to be hopeful about, as solar-generated electricity appears to be on the rise globally, not in decline.

Huge turning point for renewable energy: Solar power is becoming the cheapest form of new electricity /offgridnews/2017-01-04-huge-turning-point-for-renewable-energy-solar-power-is-becoming-the-cheapest-form-of-new-electricity.html /offgridnews/2017-01-04-huge-turning-point-for-renewable-energy-solar-power-is-becoming-the-cheapest-form-of-new-electricity.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 One of the most popular talking points when it comes to American politics and economics is the environment. Considering the fact that the earth will eventually run out of natural resources — despite the fact that it is often disputed how long that will take — it is extremely important that renewable energy sources are utilized. One of the arguments against renewable energy has been that it is too expensive. Now, it appears as though that will no longer be the case.

Tom Randall of Bloomberg Technology reports, “This year has seen a remarkable run for solar power. Auctions, where private companies compete for massive contracts to provide electricity, established record after record for cheap solar power. It started with a contract in January to produce electricity for $64 per megawatt-hour in India; then a deal in August pegging $29.10 per megawatt hour in Chile.”

This is excellent news for everyone, whether they are in the solar power business or not. The people of Earth desperately need to have renewable energy sources that we can fall back on whenever the resources that naturally exist dry up and we have to take another route in order to power our various devices. It appears as though solar energy is even more viable than wind energy in the long run, so it is a good thing that it is now at the forefront when it comes to renewable energy.

The fact that solar energy has become the cheapest form of electricity could not be better news. Hopefully, this will inspire the naysayers and people who have refused to accept that renewable energy is the way of the future to rethink their position. If there is one thing that often changes people’s minds, it is definitely the amount of money they can save if they come around to a new way of thinking.

But beyond the money that can be saved by investing in solar energy, it is important that these sources of renewable energy succeed so that they can become commonplace and eventually replace coal and other natural resources that, one day, will cease to exist. We are currently in the midst of a major shift in both economics and scientific discoveries. Both worlds are coinciding and the results could very well benefit the planet and its people. It’s up to us to acknowledge the great opportunity we currently have and capitalize on it to our best abilities.

New sustainable agriculture development in Detroit feeds 2,000 households for free /offgridnews/2016-12-27-new-sustainable-agriculture-development-in-detroit-feeds-2000-households-for-free.html /offgridnews/2016-12-27-new-sustainable-agriculture-development-in-detroit-feeds-2000-households-for-free.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 Urban renewal on a couple of acres in a northern section of Detroit, Michigan doesn’t mean fancy street signs, sprawling apartment complexes or bicycle lanes. It means a vision for clean food and sustainable agriculture to create a new kind of urban development called an “agrihood.” Parcels of land formerly in disarray are being dug up and retrofitted as an urban farm and more under the direction of the 501 (3) (c) group called the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative (MUFI).

As reported by, since 2011, when this all volunteer organization was started, 8000 volunteers have put in a total of 80,000 hours on their urban organic farm and produced over 50,000 pounds of free produce to “neighborhood residences, area churches and food pantries.” reports that plans are also in the works to build  “3,200 square foot Community Resource Center,” which will serve as volunteer headquarters and a place to teach interested parties, especially children, about health, clean food and sustainable agriculture.  A 200 tree orchard and a health food café is also in the blueprints.

The group has attracted $4 million in corporate investment dollars from General Motors, BASF SE, Sustainable Brands for MUFI and surrounding neighborhoods in Detroit’s North End. Twenty-something MUFI co-founder Tyson Gersh explains that their mission is not just about using available land to feed families who are hungry. The money is coming, says Gersh, because the initiative is a “driving force in rethinking how urban spaces are developed.”

One problem MUFI is also tackling is urban blight, or abandoned houses and buildings in such disrepair that they need to be demolished. In one instance MUFI decided not to pay for the expense of removing the foundation. Instead they are retrofitting the basement to use it as a retention pond for crop water.  Additionally, a shipping container building will be constructed on site that will house an intern to manage the farm and do agricultural research.

The government of Detroit hasn’t quite figured out how to zone or manage future agrihoods.  Gersh was able to acquire the original property through an “adopt- a- lot” program and now they utilize “20 parcels from private owners and county foreclosure program.”  Approval for ancillary agrihood activities, or acquiring more land, means they need a “yes” from multiple government agencies like the Land Bank Authority, Detroit’s City Council and/or the Planning and Development Council. says those leaders will have this on their agenda early next year.

If you’ve stopped prepping, it could be the biggest mistake of your life /offgridnews/2016-12-24-stopped-prepping-could-be-the-biggest-mistake-of-your-life-survival-caching-financial-collapse.html /offgridnews/2016-12-24-stopped-prepping-could-be-the-biggest-mistake-of-your-life-survival-caching-financial-collapse.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 In a wildly viral article from, Michael Snyder reveals that prepping has collapsed among Trump supporters since the day of the election. “[I]nterest in prepping is probably the lowest that it has ever been in the history of the modern prepper movement.  A couple of weeks ago, I wrote an article about how it was like ‘a nuclear bomb went off in the prepping community’, and nothing has changed since that time,” Snyder wrote.

Liberals and leftists, meanwhile, are suddenly stocking up like mad on food, guns and ammo. In an article titled, “Now it’s the liberals who are arming up,” reports, “Gun shop owner Michael Cargill told NBC News gun classes at his Austin, Texas store are selling out. He’s noticed an increase in LGBTQ, African-American, Hispanic and Muslim customers. Store owners told NBC they’ve seen up to four times as many minority customers than is typical.”

Liberals, it seems, are scared about the possible rise in “hate crimes” under a Trump presidency. What they don’t realize, of course, is that nearly all the hate crimes are hate hoaxes committed by leftists. But that doesn’t stop them from buying guns, which is probably a smart thing to do no matter what the fear behind it.

Preppers are being lulled into complacency by the final blow off of a wildly overvalued stock market

My warning for all preppers — no matter what your political affiliation — is that if you’ve been lulled into a sense of complacency by the rising stock market and the Trump election victory, you could be making the biggest mistake of your life. Here’s why:

The Federal Reserve has already set the debt collapse apocalypse into motion by raising interest rates. The dominoes that will fall have already begun to tumble. The Fed promises two more interest rate hikes (at least) next year, giving the absurd excuse that the “Obama economy is overheating” from all its economic abundance and must therefore be slowed down using interest rate hikes.

This is all being done to create a false narrative that Obama is handing Trump a “robust economy.” Next, rising interest rates are coupled with a halting of quantitative easing and the acceleration of debt instrument failures in Europe. The result is that at some moment in President Trump’s first term, the global debt collapse is unleashed, unraveling the decades of debt creation and mindless bank deregulation we all witnessed under Clinton, Bush and Obama.

When that nightmare lands in Trump’s lap, the most likely outcome in the streets of America will be mass riots and social chaos at a level America has never before witnessed. Remember: This is all being set into motion to blame Trump and discredit the Republican party. I’ve released a mini-documentary explaining all this. You can read the full transcript at this link. Watch the video here:

What the mass riots are going to really look like

It’s difficult to give you the full picture of what these riots will really look like, but I can start by explaining that the food stamps will almost certainly stop working for an extended period of time. You can probably imagine what that will mean in America’s inner cities. No free food from the government? Burn it down! (That’s what the food stamp recipients will be shouting as the also chant, “Kill the pigs!”)

But let me back up for a second and share something that will help you understand the “financial freeze” that will immediately follow the global debt collapse. There’s an outstanding book by Jim Rickards called The Road to Ruin: The Global Elites’ Secret Plan for the Next Financial Crisis. I strongly recommend you read or listen to this book (it’s available on, too).

As Rickards explains, the government’s solution to the next big banking crisis will be to “freeze” institutions and transactions, much like the “Ice-Nine” molecule in Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle fiction novel. As described in the book, Ice-Nine was a special kind of water molecule that was frozen solid at room temperature (its melting point was higher than room temperature). More importantly, Ice-Nine would convert all other water molecules it touched into Ice-Nine molecules. Thus, it could spread like a molecular pandemic, freezing ponds, streams, rivers and eventually, entire oceans.

The coming debt collapse will function much like Ice-Nine, Rickards explains. Because of the global interconnectedness of central banks, investment funds and retail banks, once the next large collapse strikes a single institution, it will spread to all the other connected institutions, “freezing” their transactions and assets in the same way that Ice-Nine would freeze rivers and lakes.

The newly frozen institutions will, in turn, spread the “financial freeze” to all the other institutions to which it is connected. Because no bank operates in isolation these days — everything is connected — the Ice-Nine financial freeze will quickly spread through the entire financial system, locking up the western world’s financial infrastructure on which everything in our society depends (including food stamps).

When ATMs stop working and food stamps collapse, the ignorant, unprepared, left-wing masses go berserk

This means no one will be able to get cash out of their ATMs. Food stamps won’t work. Credit card transactions will be halted at retail. Businesses won’t be able to write checks, wire money or deposit funds. Essentially, just imagine the worst case scenario in the world of banking and finance… that’s what’s coming.

The effects on the streets shouldn’t be difficult to visualize. As the following chart from Visual Capitalist shows, nearly 52% of Millennials have less than $1,000 in savings. This number is even worse among females, where nearly 57% have less than $1,000 in savings.

Across the nation, the numbers are similarly alarming. A 2013 article from reported that “Roughly three-quarters of Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck, with little to no emergency savings, according to a survey released by Monday.”

The article explains that 22% of Americans don’t even have enough cash to cover a $100 emergency expense, and 46% can’t cover an $800 expense.

Consider how this plays out when the Ice-Nine freeze kicks in across America’s financial institutions. Bluntly stated, approximately half the population will face starvation in just one week due to an inability to purchase food.

That’s when nearly every major U.S. city begins to burn. President Trump will have no choice but to declare martial law and roll out troops on the streets. The starving masses — mostly leftists who failed to prepare — will loot, steal, rob and murder anyone in sight if it gives them something to eat.

It is during this time that you will thank yourself for having some storable food on hand (like my certified organic survival food buckets). You’ll be thrilled that you picked up that extra Glock or POF-USA rifle. You’ll wish you had spent twice as much money on ammo, gold and silver (instead of the Starbucks, porn and lotto tickets you blew it on).

Don’t forget about the mindless zombies who demand your stuff, citing “equality”

As you ponder all this, don’t forget about the mindless liberal “zombies” who will wander out of the cities in a desperate effort to loot the suburbs and countryside for food and medicine supplies. I know, it’s insulting to call them “zombies.” But it’s actually not a bad description for a humanoid organism of low intelligence that’s incapable of planning. Those are the ones will will be the greatest threat to you and your safety (their total lack of preparedness turns into YOUR emergency when they show up at your door demanding you “share” your stuff).

The communist-leaning philosophy of the political left is also extremely dangerous during times of social chaos. Because they’ve been taught that “inequality” is an evil thing, they truly believe that your stuff belongs in their hands so that everybody is “equal.” Of course, they didn’t spend equal time or money to prepare, did they? So what they’re really doing is justifying their theft by calling it “equality.” (And that’s communism in a nutshell, come to think of it.)

If you live in a rural area, you may want to double check the range, in yards, to your front gate, and match it to your DOPE charts. If you don’t know why that’s important, you might not be qualified to live in the country during a zombie apocalypse. Make sure you have a PVS-14 at the ready, since the zombies come out at night, as Michael Jackson showed us in Thriller.

I’m also a proponent of micro-caching, meaning hiding your stuff in small containers that are distributed in different places around your home or yard. Don’t have all your stash in one place. It’s not a bad idea to have a spare handgun, ammo and some gold or silver coins buried in an air-tight, water-tight container that you can recover when needed. The MTM SAC Survivor Ammo Can is a good choice. You can pick these up for around $20.

Find a great review of survival caching at, which covers humidity, corrosion control and other topics.

Debt collapse ‘perfect storm’ shaping up that will almost instantly wipe out pension funds nationwide /offgridnews/2016-12-22-debt-collapse-perfect-storm-shaping-up-that-will-almost-instantly-wipe-out-pension-funds-nationwide.html /offgridnews/2016-12-22-debt-collapse-perfect-storm-shaping-up-that-will-almost-instantly-wipe-out-pension-funds-nationwide.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 There is a “perfect storm” of events shaping up that will take most Americans by surprise – especially those who paid into, and now rely on, a pension to help make ends meet after retirement.

Unbeknownst to most people, pension funds in the United States are grossly underfunded. In fact, according to The Financial Times, academic research has determined that the collective funding shortfall for all U.S. public pension funds combined is three times larger than official figures indicate – and it’s getting bigger.

Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., said that for years it has been clear “that many cities and states are critically underfunding their pension programs and hiding the fiscal holes with accounting tricks.” In fact, the city of Dallas just moved to freeze withdrawals from its fire and police pension funds because they are billions of dollars in the hole.

Nunes introduced legislation in the House in November to reform how public pension plans report their figures to the general public. He said that when the funds become insolvent, “they will create problems so disastrous that the fund officials assume the federal government will have to bail them out.”

‘Five or 10 years out there will be major failures

In other words, taxpayers will be on the hook to pay for something they never contributed to, had nothing to do with setting up and had no role in managing, via elected representatives. In fact, Congress has already considered this as a real option.

Already, major pension shortfalls have played a huge role in driving a number of large American cities to bankruptcy. These include Detroit, the biggest of them all, as well as San Bernardino, Calif., and others. Many fear that cities, too, will soon become insolvent because their pension plans are far too generous for the amount of funding they bring in.

“The pension problems are threatening to consume state and local budgets in the absence of some major changes,” said Joshua Rauh, a senior fellow of finance at the Hoover Institute, a think tank, and finance professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, who helped conduct the study.

He noted further that it’s very likely that over the next five to 10 years there will be many more pension-related citywide bankruptcies.

Again, it’s very probable that most Americans have no idea this financial tsunami is coming. But it is, just the same, and when it strikes, it could affect tens of millions of people.

In fact, as reported by Project Chesapeake, the pension debt bubble, when it bursts, is liable to overwhelm most Americans and send their standard of living spiraling down to levels last seen during the Great Depression.

Some financial observers and analysts, despite the recent meteoric rise of the U.S. stock market, believe that the country is headed for an era of super depression – meaning poverty would be even more widespread than after the stock market collapse in 1929. That’s because the larger the debt cycle is, the bigger the subsequent depression when the bottom falls out.

One giant Venezuela

Then, more than simply public pensions will be drained. Government benefit programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid will also be emptied, as the government – already $20 trillion in debt (about $10 trillion of which was added just during the Obama administration) – will simply be unable to raise enough money to fund all of its obligations. It can’t simply print more because boosting the money supply will simply lead to more inflation and make the dollar worth even less.

So, in essence, the federal government is in much the same shape as local cities and entire states. Over the decades, pandering politicians seeking votes have made promises to the masses that the country can no longer keep, financially speaking. When you don’t have the money to pay out benefits, the only way to get it is from the people. This would take massive new tax increases, but these would come even as tens of millions of Americans lost their savings and their pension incomes, leaving them with nothing. So what would be left to tax?

The “rich” will become a favorite target (they already are), but Congress can return to that well only so many times. Eventually the rich will take their possessions and their wealth and leave the country.

Between the failing public pensions and the massive U.S. national debt, America will change dramatically, and almost overnight, going from an easy-credit, debt-ridden society to one that is completely broke, which will greatly diminish our status in the world.

We’ll become one giant Venezuela.

When your family’s safety is at risk, here’s how to grow your food in secret /offgridnews/2016-07-27-when-your-familys-safety-is-at-risk-heres-how-to-grow-your-food-in-secret.html /offgridnews/2016-07-27-when-your-familys-safety-is-at-risk-heres-how-to-grow-your-food-in-secret.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 ( No one likes to think about a time when our society may break down due to social unrest, but clearly we are living in times when that possibility is becoming more and more likely. Food security is, therefore, even more imperative now than perhaps at any time in our lives.

Your typical garden that you plant every year is a high-yield, organic blessing and as homesteaders, our gardens are our lifeline. But growing food in neat, little rows also advertises the fact that we have food – and it may be food that others will want to take for themselves if stuff hits the fan. Therefore, it may become necessary to plant a garden in secret, so that we can hide our food production and still feed our families.

This is not an exaggeration; plenty of urban gardeners who have carefully tended a patch of tomatoes, peppers or corn have reported their crops being stolen in the dark of night just as the food was ready to be harvested. If that can happen in times of relative “plenty,” just imagine what things will be like after a real crisis.

Therefore, it is crucial that you find methods to camouflage your survival garden. There are several ways this can be accomplished. Some of them are a bit involved and require a fair amount of knowledge and hard work, while others are relatively easy.

Let’s first take a look at a somewhat complex approach.

Planting a “secret survival garden”

Rick Austin is the generally-acknowledged “guru” of survival gardening. He incorporates a permaculture approach that mimics nature and focuses on growing perennials. This tactic happens to produce a high-yield garden that requires little or no tending once planted, and it also creates a perfectly disguised food factory that is virtually unrecognizable as being a garden at all.

Austin describes his techniques and theories at length in his book, Secret Garden of Survival: How to Grow a Camouflaged Food Forest.

As Austin notes:

“Studies of native indigenous people around the world, people who have lived off the land for generations without electricity, without refrigeration, without commercial agriculture, and without pesticides and insecticides showed that these people have lived primarily on perennials as opposed to annuals such as your typical grocery store vegetables.”

In a possible future scenario where there might be no power grid, traditional gardening methods will likely not be the best approach, especially when stealth becomes a crucial factor. Austin’s solution is sound, but until you can fully commit to this approach, there are a few very simple ways to disguise your garden without having to go to any great lengths.

Simple methods for camouflaging your garden

Getting away from centralized row planting is key to camouflaging your survival garden. It’s a good idea to plant separate patches in different spots. This will help keep your plantings from looking like a typical garden, and even if a marauder finds one or two patches, others are likely to go untouched.

Plant along the perimeters of your property rather than in the center of the yard or lot. If possible, plant some food crops away from your property, e.g. at the edge of a forest or in clearings you have access to. You should also consider planting in a cleared area in the middle of thicket that would deter the average person from entering or thinking there might be a crop planted there.

Grow foods that don’t obviously look like edibles. Some food crops are more difficult to conceal, such as corn or tomatoes; others, like beans and tubers, are not as easy to spot.

Camouflaging your crops will likely prove to be essential to survival when the SHTF. Start taking steps now to hide your precious food supply. It could very well mean the difference between life and death when society crumbles.

How to make tomato cages that last for just pennies on the dollar /offgridnews/2016-07-15-how-to-make-tomato-cages-that-last-for-just-pennies-on-the-dollar.html /offgridnews/2016-07-15-how-to-make-tomato-cages-that-last-for-just-pennies-on-the-dollar.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 ( You may chuckle at the name – but “Stake-A-Cage” really is the best way to describe the trellis system we came up with a few years ago to effectively and inexpensively tie up our tomatoes and peppers. We get a lot of questions about it on the blog – so we thought today we would explain it in detail, along with details at the end of the post on how to make your own.

A few years back, with the garden planted, and about 45 tomato plants growing quicker than we imagined – we knew we needed to give them support and fast! After suffering sticker shock at the prices of tomato cages and stakes in the store, we decided to see what we could come up with ourselves.

We had some left-over welded wire fencing from building the outdoor run for the chicken coop, along with wooden stakes we had used to stake out the area where the coop and barn would go. So – in desperate need to tie up some tomato plants that were falling over – we used wire cutters to quickly cut the fencing into small grid panels. Next, we attached them to the wooden stakes with fencing nails we had on hand – and the Stake-A-Cage was born.

After we put a few up – we started realizing that we had something! Not only did they go together easily – they looked great and had a lot of advantages over the commercial cages or old wooden stakes we had used in the past.

For starters, it combines the best of the two old ways used to tie up tomatoes; the strength of strong wooden stake with the ease of a wire trellis cage.

Although stakes are strong in the soil – it’s always been hard to tie the vines to them as the plants grow larger throughout the season. And although cages provide a better support for the tomato plants – they become hard to pick through as the plants grow. Not to mention our cages always seemed grow right out of the ground and topple over as the season progressed.

Hence, the use of the Stake A Cage.

Dramatically expand your harvest with vertical gardening: 13 reasons why you should do it /offgridnews/2016-07-08-dramatically-expand-your-harvest-with-vertical-gardening-13-reasons-why-you-should-do-it.html /offgridnews/2016-07-08-dramatically-expand-your-harvest-with-vertical-gardening-13-reasons-why-you-should-do-it.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 ( Jack had it right when he planted the magic seeds that grew into a sky high beanstalk. Not only did he stumble upon the principles of vertical gardening; but Jack also discovered the path to abundance and self-reliance when he realized he could provide for himself and his family as a result of the riches he discovered after growing vegetables vertically.

Just like with most new ideas, at first the idea is novel and a small group of people embrace it while others look on thinking they’re crazy; however, there comes a tipping point when enough people recognize that the crazy idea is actually the leading edge of genius and all of a sudden, everyone’s doing it. That’s what’s happening with the idea of growing food vertically, taking advantage of the uncharted sky and reducing your garden’s footprint.

Soil or water medium?

Essentially, there are two types of vertical gardens — those that grow in soil and those that grow in water. Water-based growing mediums are either aquaponic or hydroponic. Hydroponics is a method of growing vegetables and other plants in water without soil and nourished with a mineral nutrient. Aquaponics is a growing system combining the raising of aquatic animals such as fish with hydroponic gardening, where plants are cultivated in a water medium all in the same tank. The symbiotic relationship between the plants and animals produces a vital growing medium and a sustainable food production system. Both systems provide organic or non-organic growing environments for vegetables.

Reasons to grow vertically

So, why would you want to take advantage of growing a garden vertically, instead of in a traditional garden plot? There are lots of reasons.

1. Old souls love to putter in the garden, but the oldest of souls usually complain about their backs and knees hurting. Vertical gardening enables you to grow veggies without ever bending or getting on your knees again. Grow vertically in plant pockets, hanging planters, stacking containers, recycled pallets, in stacked flower boxes, table garden systems, plant trees, in greenhouses on tables and up-cycled ladders. If you can imagine it, you can grow it.

2. Save space with a vertical garden, especially if you have no land or a very small yard. Grow up the side of your fence, on a wall, the deck, your balcony, in a green house or even inside in the garage.

3. Some vertical garden systems are portable and can be moved from outside to indoors on wheeled apparatus.

4. Grow inside during colder month, using a grow light.

5. Community gardens are easy to set up, even in small, indoor spaces.

6. There’s much less work and time involved when preparing vertical gardens — no tilling, no digging.

7. Use less water because in many vertical gardens, water is recycled through the planting system.

8. You’re dog won’t dig up your garden, and neither will rabbits or deer.

9. It’s an easier way to protect your plants from soil-borne pests.

10. Companion gardening is easy and even more advantageous when you can move planters around to take advantage of beneficial conditions.

11. Using no soil means no weeds or fewer weeds in less soil.

12. Increase vegetable yield. Relocate plants to better take advantage of light and air circulation.

13. My favorite reason for being a fan of vertical gardening is to avoid the prying eyes of municipal authorities — those people forcing others to dig up gardens and destroy their food supply. Vertical gardening allows you to grow food in less obvious places, even under grow lights, out of site of the food police.

Just remember, it’s never too soon to plan your new vertical garden project.

These 22 tips will help you save money when you adopt the raw food lifestyle /offgridnews/2016-06-22-these-22-tips-will-help-you-save-money-when-you-adopt-the-raw-food-lifestyle.html /offgridnews/2016-06-22-these-22-tips-will-help-you-save-money-when-you-adopt-the-raw-food-lifestyle.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 ( Who doesn’t like saving more money? If you’ve recently gotten interested in the raw food diet and lifestyle and are trying to find more ways to save money doing it, here is a collection of money saving tips for you. Finding a way to make this diet sustainable for you and your wallet is probably one of the most important factors in making it work for you. The other two factors are that you have to make it fun and healthy/balanced!

1. Invest in a dehydrator and make your own chips, crackers, cookies, dehydrated nuts, etc. A good idea would be to copy down the ingredients of packaged raw food snacks and make your own version of them at home. It can be more fun this way and you can make enough for some friends too.

2. Borrow raw food and other health/spiritual books from the library instead of buying them and reading them once from the bookstore or online. You’d be surprised at how many raw food books the library system has. Most library websites have a request function that will transfer the book(s) you want to your local branch and notify you when it’s ready to pick up.

3. Additional book options: You can organize a book exchange with some other health-conscious friends. Or you can buy those books you know you want for your personal collection from an online bookstore.

4. Buy your supplements online and preferably in bulk, if possible.

5. If you don’t need or want that much product, create co-ops with your friends, buy in bulk, and split the shipping.

6. Make your own beauty products out of the foods you now have in your kitchen.

7. Make and exchange food with friends in order to try out new recipes and save on money and time: Either make raw food recipes in big batches and share among friends, or organize your own potluck and invite some friends. To make it easy on them, you can give them some easy recipes to choose from or direct them to one of the many raw food recipe websites online.

8. Buy used kitchen equipment: Check online, at local health food stores on the notice board, or ask your friends and family if they have a food processor, blender, or juicer they don’t use that you could borrow.

9. Join a wholesale club and save big on family-sized bags and boxes of fruits and vegetables. You will probably go through these just as fast as a family would! You can find avocados, dates, organic spinach, raw nuts, some frozen fruit, and select organic fresh fruit at these stores.

10. Create your own personal raw food recipe books with all of your favorite or most appealing recipes by copying and pasting all of your favorite recipes posted online onto a word processing document. You can use the find function just as you would the index of the book.

11. Always search several websites online for the best possible price before buying online (especially supplements). It’s usually the same product online versus at a raw food restaurant or health food store.

12. Make your own Rejuvelac and/or Kombucha if you can. Do a search online for ingredients and instructions. It’s very easy and economical to do. It could save you money on Probiotic supplements as well.

13. Sprout your own sprouts. Each tray of sprouts will only cost you about .20-.30 cents each and $4-5 dollars at the store.

14. Shop where the organic food is most affordable first: Buy whatever good organic food is available at the farmers market or smaller produce stores before going to the big chain natural food store. Then figure out your menu or recipe ideas for the week, based on what you have to work with in your fridge.

15. Buy all your spices and nuts, seeds, grain, and dried fruit in the bulk section of your big chain natural food store. Because you’re not paying for the packaging, it’s a lot less expensive.

16. If available, buy mint, basil, rosemary and other fresh herbs in the bulk section of the natural foods grocery store for substantial savings.

17. If you can’t afford to buy all organic produce (some are quite hard to even find organic), switch to buying conventional product for those fruits and vegetables carrying the least amount of pesticides when grown conventionally: broccoli, eggplant, cabbage, banana, kiwi, asparagus, sweet peas, mango, pineapple, sweet corn, avocado, onion. Buy only organic for the “dirty dozen,” produce found to carry the highest amount of pesticides when grown conventionally: peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, lettuce, imported grapes, pears, spinach, and potatoes. For more information, click here.

18. Love your sea veggies? Avoid buying the $5 to $6 bags unless you are experimenting with new ones. Buying online in bulk (2-4 lbs at a time) is most economical. You could also split the order with someone else to share the cost of the shipping and handling.

19. Forage for free wild foods for super nutrition (e.g. dandelion, clover, purslane, stinging nettles, etc.) . Use some of these greens in your salads, smoothies, and juices and save money in the store.

20. Sign up to receive newsletters from raw food online stores for announcements on special sales and promotions. Be notified and take advantage when you need to restock on supplies!

21. Get involved in a loyalty marketing business and get access to superfoods and supplements at a discount. OR get started in your own at home business to start making money so you can afford spending more on healthy foods and superfoods. Get free education on raw foods and superfoods with these sorts of companies as well!

22. Don’t forget all of those other areas you’re saving in now that you’re living more of a raw vegan lifestyle: gas bills, doctor and hospital visits, prescription medicine, OTC medicine, coffee, soda, candy, (and other junk food,) expensive cooked food restaurants (not that you won’t go to these again but you won’t be ordering $35 entrees and appetizers and desserts there).
